There were 8 bands playing in an uncommonly cool basement venue called Moo Monk. 7 bucks later I was actually listening to some music I could bear. I've never been a huge punk fan but anything is better than foreign ballads, especially when leather pants and boots are involved. The bands all had their own niche of the punk sound. Hyuk's band plays feel good ska/punk with a little Social Distortion mixed in. Some were hardcore and screaming (which I like), some even played solos which is rare for a punk band. There are many times that I have felt strange and out of place in Korea but somehow in the midst of mohawks and tattoos I felt more at home than ever.
Afterwards we went to a soju bar. By we I mean myself, another foreign teacher from Daejeon, and every member of every band that played. There were Korean friends and girlfriends thrown in too, but I think I was one of about 4 white faces in 30-40 people. We took over this little soju place and had an awesome time. It's great to see a guy with a red mohawk and a full arm sleeve tattoo run around hugging people. That was my Saturday night, here are a couple crappy cell phone camera pics. I never have my camera when I actually want/need it.
I've also included a picture of the worst tattoo ever. That's how it was introduced to me by it's owner's friends. If you can't make it out it's a cartoony punker kicking a zombie thing (I think it's some kind of metaphor about being against the establishment and white collar jobs). We were all cracking up at it and his excuse was "It was free!" haha. Also there is a bonus pic from a tram in the mountains above (B)Pusan.
Bonus trivia: The Korean letter/symbol for P and B is the same which is why Busan can also be written Pusan. There are a couple of letters like this in Korea, this leads to some pronunciation problems. I think R and L are the same too.

yo nef! Just back from Greece, where it was hot hot hot hot. 95-112 in Corfu! Because of the heat we didn't get out and about and see much there, so consequently we're judging the island based on our time in 'Corfu Town' - very touristy and sort of boring, without any nice beaches. A few of the orchestra members took a bus ride out of town and found nicer places (and people!) so maybe we should give it another chance someday. On the other hand, Samos was friendly, temperate, beautiful beach and nice people. I would definitely go back there!!!!
Not as many people in the audience as the symphony would have liked, but the concerts went pretty well. I think those that attended enjoyed themselves. People were generally in shock that we'd come all the way from Alaska to Greece :) I found the Greeks more rude than the Italians on more than one level. Waiting ones turn doesn't appear to be a concept that they worry about, and if there's a disagreement there is a LOT of yelling!! Doesn't matter where you are, either, everyone around you knows you're upset. Also, the airport personnel in Athens were rude and obnoxious.... Nevermind that we were stuck in the airport for 7 hours, overnight, one cannot sleep in the chairs!! They would come around and wake people up, but it was ok to sit there... very weird.
We had a grueling trip home. 11 hrs on the milk-run ferry due to the cancellation of our flight out of Samos (no explanations as to why); then the 7 hrs in the airport; a 4 hr flight to Frankfurt; overnight there; 3 more hrs in the airport in Frnk; 9 hrs to Whitehorse, Canada; 40 min layover there; missed our connecting flights in Anchorage; 4hr wait again. We were wiped out when we finally got home around 8pm, which for our body clocks was around 6am combined with all the flying. it sucked.... Stayed up as long as possible last night in order to get our time zones straightened out, but I'm ready for a nap now!
Glad to see that you are finding things, people, and places to keep yourself entertained. Cute netting :) Just, please, don't come home with a dyed mohawk. Tats ok, though. Meredith wants another one of the Big Dipper on the inside of one of her fingers, but we'll see if it ever appears. I find the one on her foot is actually quite tasteful.
Kelly is at Ruth's with Mono. Pretty sick from what I hear. Hope she gets better soon. No Ranch this year. We leave for Portland around the 17th of August.
love you kiddo - keep in touch Auntie G
The Greek are stubborn arrogant people, but I still love em. I was Greek for six years after all.
